A temporary stoma is a surgery that can be reversed; which means the doctor can perform a surgery to create a stoma in order to heal the damaged part of the intestine and reconnect the intestine once healed.

A permanent stoma is irreversible; which means a total ablation of an important part of the digestive system or urinary system is required. The patient will then wear a colostomy or urinary pouch for the rest of their life.
